About Us

Some of you already know a lot about us, some of you don’t. This is a chance for you to get to know us better. The history of the Big Ten Restaurant is likely better told by those who experienced it first hand over the years. If you know any alumni, they could tell you some stories about us because we have been on campus for over 5 decades! We will give you the Cliff’s notes here but don’t be shy and ask your parents, grandparents or even your server for a story about us.

The Big Ten Restaurant was established in 1955 at the current Stadium Village location and served homemade soups, stews and fresh bread from a cafe counter with a few stools for the U of M students.

During the 60’s & 70’s, The Big Ten was a popular escape for students at the U. There was a piano near the back entrance of the bar, where students hung out, sang songs, and threw back a few.

Big10_sub_sandwich1aIn the early 80’s the restaurant began serving roast beef and meatball sandwiches from behind the bar. Later hamburgers, fries and the now famous Big Ten Subs were added to the menu. This is when we started growing beyond just a hang out for U of M students.

The 90’s saw the Big Ten Restaurant sprinting ahead. We purchased the Big Ten in 1992 and we have been doing our best to honor the rich traditions of this amazing piece of history. We were feeling a little ambitious after a few years and decided to open the Hopkins location in 1996. It has become one of the most popular places to eat in all of the west metro.

Today, our famous subs and award winning Spicy Wings remain the most popular items on the menu. Our signature burgers and chicken sandwiches coming fresh from the grill are hard to pass up, so you might have to come back a few times to try it all. With multiple appetizers to choose from as well as wraps, salads, homemade chili and fresh soups, it’s no wonder this is such a popular place to eat.

Some of our customers consider us a sports bar, some consider us a fast food sub shop, some consider us a family restaurant, and some consider us the best catering company in town. We consider ourselves all of the above. That’s the beauty of the Big Ten; we are what you want us to be and we do it without changing who we are. We love doing what we do, and we think that is a big reason why we are so good at it. Come check us out and see for yourself what happens when award winning food meets a sports bar. It might sound like bragging but we are very proud of what the Big Ten Restaurant is, was, and will be for years to come. We hope to enjoy many more years of good times with our customers, and we hope that includes you.

Our campus location is closed, but we are still hoppin' in Hopkins!!
